Team Giant-Alpecin rider Lars van der Haar scored a silver medal in a gutsy, aggressive showing Sunday at the 2016 UCI Cyclocross World Championships in Zolder, Belgium. Facing muddy conditions and a strong contingent of Belgians in the elite men’s category, the Dutch rider attacked and rode at the front on his TCX Advanced Pro bike, and in the end finished just behind Belgian Wout van Aert.

“I was close to the title today, but I was just not better than Wout,” van der Haar said afterward. “I wanted to attack, I created a gap and gave my all.”

Van der Haar made his move at the midway point of the race, jetting off the front with five laps to go. He created an immediate gap and stayed alone at the front until he was reeled in by Van Aert on the penultimate lap. The two battled on the final lap until van Aert got an advantage on the final climb.

“Wout was very strong,” van der Haar said. “I hoped he would suffer under the pressure in his home race, but he closed the gap unfortunately. I did everything right, except for one thing. My chain was still on the outer chainring on the climb, and Wout ran away from me.

The silver medal is van der Haar’s best result yet in the elite category at Worlds. The 24-year-old owns two bronze medals (2013, 2015) and now a silver to add to his collection.

“Of course I am disappointed but I can live with the fact that Wout was stronger today,” van der Haar said. “I felt good and colored the race. The gold medal will come one day.”
